Iris’s line of work had given her some very useful powers in the underground. On the surface, being a spy was a job filled with danger around every corner. It wasn’t like the movies, but it was still risky, given she could be caught and interrogated at any time.
When you thought of international super spies like Austin Crowders and James Pond, action and adventure came to mind. But how much actual spying did they do? They were more like action heroes, given a mission and doing anything to achieve it.
Being a spy – a real spy – simply meant putting yourself in the right place at the right time. Getting access to areas that you shouldn’t be allowed into. Easy enough for an attractive young woman. A middle-aged man that was in surprisingly good shape for his age? Not so much. That was too obvious.
And so, to give a demonstration of the magic her work had given her, Iris simply turned herself invisible. The perfect tool for espionage and infiltration.
Gideon and Lorenzo shared a perplexed look at first, but then the architect’s face split into a wide grin. “Oh, excellent,” he said. “This will come in quite useful. I’ll have to vouch for the others to get them places, given my reputation as one of the best modern home builders on the Mornington Peninsula, but you have another skill set entirely.”
Iris allowed herself to reappear before them. “I can also enhance my senses to better gather information, which could come in useful. You’ll have to fill me in, though. You are quite famous when it comes to being a luxury residential architect. Mornington Peninsula residents obviously want quite deluxe homes, which you’ll get the others to help with for spying purposes. What do you need me for, then?”
The luxury house builder put a hand on Lorenzo’s shoulder. “You will be spying on our rivals, the Zircon Clan. However, I need you to keep this secret from the others in your group. Can you do that?”
Iris nodded. “There are more secrets between the five of us than you could imagine. A couple more aren’t going to hurt.”
